ECHINODERMS
The name Echinoderm means 'spiny skinned', and covers, Starfish, brittle stars, Sea Urchins, Sea lilies and Sea cucumbers.
Some starfish have the ability to regenerate lost limbs.
Patiriella regularis Easy to keep The common cushion star is a five legged star it can be colourful and can be found in a range of colours yellow purple orange white red blue/green. Found along the coast of New Zealand, found in amongst boulders and rock pools at low tide. Peaceful except when very large. Minimun Tank : 100 litres preferably larger and at least At least 2 months old. Diet: Feeds on general detritus and scavenges.
Ophiopteris antipodum Description: Generally a blackish red shade with its legs covered in flat spines that give it its name. It is a very fast moving brittle star. Habitat: Found along the coast of northern New Zealand Found in amongst boulders and rock pools at low tide. Minimun Tank Size: 100 litres preferably larger. Maturity: At least 6 months Diet: They filter plankton and detritus for food. can be eaten by Hermit Crabs.

Temperament: Can raise up on its legs and trap fish, crustaceans etc. Minimun Tank Size: 100 litres preferably larger. Tank Age / Maturity: At least 6 months Diet: Feeds on snails, small fish, crustaceans and any meaty foods

The arms can break easily if the animal is disturbed, It is a very fast moving star. (Astropecten polyacanthus) Generally a blackish red shade with its legs covered in flat spines that give it its name. It is a very fast moving brittle star Habitat: Found along the coast of northern New Zealand Found in amongst boulders and rock pools at low tide , lives almost its entire life burrowed under the sand where it can sometimes be inferred from a slight five-armed depression. Minimun Tank : 100 lites Needs a deep sand bed to live in
Holopneustes purpurascens A nice urchin, more white/tan that purple, at least at the stage i've collected them. Self introduced Aussie import, slowly increasing population around the north island coast. Common, subtidally in weeded rocky areas. Tank Size: 400 litres preferably larger. Diet: Eat coraline and other encrusted bits on rocks, Can be eaten by large snails
(Heliocidaris tuberculata) This species is generally red in colour however it can be a dark brown. The Tuberculate gets up to 12cm. Self introduced Aussie import, slowly increasing population around the north island coast. Common, subtidally in weeded rocky areas. Eat coraline and other encrusted bits on rocks, like tuxedo urchins. Also like most macro algaes and carries pieces around on its back for later. Special Requirements: Regular additions of kelp type weed and enough coraline
